Video Installation - Linear Fiction

Linear Fiction demonstrates our reinterpretation and extension of envy envy & File Studio’s installations. We are inspired by the installations’ visual elements —— lines, starting from the randomness of the curves, and shaping the entity through constantly changing concepts. Utilizing various digital media technologies, we referenced microbial forms and movement patterns to craft a fictional narrative about the virtual lifeforms.
Linear Fiction—Unity is depicted within a narrow, towering video installation (height:2.08m), amplifying a microscopic perspective at an unavoidable height—highlighting everything from the character’s lightning-like transformations to its flowing hair and the floating particles in space. The deformed lines are interwoven with the passage of time, creating an image of the character akin to an hourglass. The pulsing, symbolic lines above the character’s head, which serve as both the concept of the work and the building blocks of virtual lifeforms, evoke the ticking of a timer. This projected timer, in turn, drives the energy shifts within the space.
In another installation, the lifeforms' narrative is presented in the style of a pseudo-documentary, tracing the journey from abstract lines to microscopic observations, from the slow processes of natural evolution to the final form of the lifeforms. The randomly fluctuating curves mirror both the natural and the ordered aspects of form. Within this fictionalized logic and order, we imagine the lifeforms’ story, as the narrative suggests: the Lines from the East — we can't touch them, but only feel them.
